该片讲述了在上世纪二十年代，江苏南通的伶工学社有一批国内最早学习话剧的孩子们，他们为在这乱世中活着而挣扎，为推广话剧而煞费苦心，他们融贯中西，将一样舶来品内化成自我表达，最终感染了所有人，共同为社会思想进步推波助澜。。Photographer Greg Nolan meets Bernice, and loses both his job and his apartment. However, Bernice manages to get him a new apartment, but it is so expensive that he has to get two full-time jobs. Nolan has trouble finding time to do them both without his bosses finding out.。
